What does a Fire Inspector?

The Fire Inspector (FI), under the general supervision of the Assistant Fire Marshal, performs a range of fire prevention activities. These include inspecting buildings and facilities to ensure compliance with fire and life safety codes, as well as investigating the origin and cause of fires.

Fire Inspectors also develop and coordinate fire prevention and public education programs, provide guidance on safe practices and code compliance, and collaborate with suppression personnel and partner agencies at the city, county, and state levels. Additional duties may be assigned as needed.

 

Requirements

The FI must have the minimum level of training and education, license and certification, or the ability to complete and obtain requirements identified as follows:

  • Training & Education:
    • High school diploma or GED; California State Fire Service certification accredited courses is desirable.
    • Three (3) years in the fire service, with duties in fire prevention and public education.
    • A minimum of one year of experience investigating fires is desirable.
  • License and Certifications
    • California Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record at the time of hire, maintained throughout employment. 
    • California Penal Code 832 Certification must be obtained within one year of hire.  
    • Possession of a Fire Inspector I Certification issued by the California State Fire Marshal’s Office is required within one year of hire.

What Does a Hazardous Materials Inspector Do?

The Hazardous Materials Inspector (HMI) provides administrative and technical support to the Fire Prevention Division’s Hazardous Materials Unit, which administers the State-Certified Unified Program Agency (CUPA), the adopted California Fire Code, to ensure compliance with State and local hazardous materials laws, regulations and requirements. The HMI spends most of their time in the field performing complex inspections to ensure compliance with laws and regulations applicable to a number of hazardous materials programs, including, but not limited to, the storage of hazardous materials in aboveground and underground storage tanks, storage and handling of hazardous materials at businesses, the storage and treatment of hazardous wastes.

Requirements

The HMI must have any combination equivalent to experience and education that would provide the required knowledge and abilities to perform the work would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain knowledge and abilities would be:

  • Education:
    • Equivalent to the completion of a Bachelor’s Degree with major coursework in the areas of Chemistry, Biology, Toxicology or a related field of science with core courses in Chemistry or education and experience that satisfies the Title 27 requirement for hazardous waste inspectors within one year of hire.  
  • Experience:
    • Two years of experience with environmental and/or life safety regulations involving the storage, use, handling, and/or disposal of hazardous materials.
    • Two years’ experience responding to or handling hazardous materials emergencies is desirable.  Experience as a government agency inspector is preferred.
  • License:
    • Completion of PC 832 certification is required prior to completion of probation.
    • Meet the requirements of California Title 27 CCR Section 15260(d)(1)(A) and (B) prior to the end of the probationary period.  
    • Valid California Class C Driver’s License
