Emergency Preparedness

Report a Hazard

Keeping our community safe starts with recognizing and reporting hazards early. If you see something dangerous, such as a gas leak, chemical spill, or any condition that could threaten life, property, or the environment, call 911 immediately. Your quick action helps prevent small issues from becoming emergencies.

When to Call 911 (Emergency Hazard Reporting)

Call 911 immediately if any of the following occur:

  • An emergency is already in progress.
  • A hazard poses an imminent threat to life, property, or the environment.
    • Examples: smell of gas, carbon monoxide alarm sounding.
  • You suspect a fire in your home or business.
    • Examples: visible smoke, strange burning smell, walls or surfaces that are hot without explanation.

Non-Emergency Hazard Reporting

If a hazard exists but does not pose an immediate danger, please call (925) 454-2361 or complete our contact form.

Reporting a Hazardous Materials Spill

Some spills or releases of dangerous substances must be reported by law. Reporting is essential even if you aren’t sure how serious the spill is — when in doubt, report it.

Type of Release What You Should Do
If the release poses an imminent threat to safety, property, or the environment Call 911 immediately
If you believe the release may still be hazardous, but not necessarily an emergency Call LPFD at (925) 454-2361 or leave a detailed message outside of business hours
If the quantity released exceeds certain legal thresholds (Federal, State, or Local) A written follow-up report will be required within 7 days in many cases

Failure to report a required release may result in penalties. There are no penalties for reporting a non-reportable spill.

How to Help Us Help You

  • Where the incident is located (address, cross streets)
  • Approximate quantity or size of the spill/release
  • Time and date it was discovered
  • Any immediate dangers you see
  • Your contact information (so we can reach you with questions or updates)
