Safe Surrender Program

The Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department participates in California’s Safe Surrender Program, a confidential and safe way for parents or guardians to surrender a newborn they are unable to care for. This program is designed to protect infants from abandonment in unsafe environments while ensuring parents have a responsible, judgment-free option in times of crisis.

What is the Safe Surrender Program?

Under California law, a parent or legal guardian may safely surrender an infant within 72 hours of birth to any designated Safe Surrender site, such as a hospital or fire station, without fear of arrest or prosecution—as long as the baby shows no signs of abuse or neglect.

How the Process Works

  • Bring the infant to any LPFD fire station or other designated Safe Surrender site.
  • Hand the newborn to on-duty personnel and let them know you wish to participate in the Safe Surrender Program.
  • You will be offered a confidential medical questionnaire to help ensure the baby receives proper medical care. Providing this information is voluntary.
  • You will receive a confidential, coded bracelet that matches the one placed on the infant, allowing for the possibility of reclaiming the child within 14 days should you change your mind.
