This program was created to ensure the “cradle-to-grave” (generation, treatment, transportation, storage, and disposal) management of hazardous wastes are done properly to minimize the negative impact of these materials to human health and the environment.
Common businesses that generate hazardous wastes include, but are not limited to the following:
Automotive repair shops, dry cleaners, laboratories, dentist offices, pharmacies, chemical plants, manufacturing facilities.
Common hazardous wastes include, but are not limited to the following:
Used oil, used antifreeze, spent solvents, used batteries, expired chemicals, discarded pharmaceuticals and pesticides, discarded mercury containing products such as fluorescent lamps and switches, discarded ignitable, corrosive, reactive and toxic chemicals, etc.
Facilities that generate hazardous waste must be registered as a hazardous waste generator in the California Environmental Reporting System (CERS).
Facilities that generate hazardous waste are routinely inspected by the Fire Department to ensure they follow the law and the regulations. To learn more about the definition of hazardous waste and the generator requirements follow the links below.
